Lambda Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered September 10, 1977 by 25 determined and diligent women becoming the second graduate chapter in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. To date, there are more than 600 members in the chapter.
Over the years, Lambda Pi Omega has implemented a variety of local community service programs and events, recently shifting to virtual offerings to adjust to the times. The chapter's Educational Advancement Foundation Committee has raised thousands of dollars for scholarships. The annual Real Talk Real Tools Webinars, in collaboration with local businesses, have provided expert advice and insights regarding financial independence. The chapter also has provided health seminars to promote the importance of nutrition, fitness, and self-care for mental, emotional and physical health.
Focusing on communities in Wayne County, Lambda Pi Omega established the Pearls of Promise Foundation, Incorporated in 2002, a separate philanthropic arm that raises funds to assist the chapter in fostering programs in the areas of education, health, family development, the arts, finance, and leadership development. The chapter continuously collaborates with and/or supports national and community-based organizations, such as the Financial Literacy Program with other Metro-Detroit Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, in addition to the American Heart Association, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Poetry from Our Past: Direction for Our Future in conjunction with the Detroit Public Library, the Reading Literacy Program for students at Carver STEM Academy and Gleaners, just to name a few.
The skilled, visionary, college-educated women of Lambda Pi Omega Chapter have made tremendous strides over the last four decades in Detroit and its surrounding areas. Currently, Lambda Pi Omega is implementing the sorority’s international platform of: “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood" to build upon Alpha Kappa Alpha's rich legacy of service by galvanizing our sisterhood of more than 120,000 active members to lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy.
