Lambda Pi Omega (LPO) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered on September 10, 1977, by 25 determined and visionary women, becoming the second graduate chapter in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. Today, we are proud to have grown into a dynamic chapter with more than 500 accomplished members.

Lambda Pi Omega has been a beacon of service and excellence for over four decades, implementing impactful community programs and events that uplift and empower. Our signature initiative, Ray of Hope, stands as a testament to our commitment to addressing housing insecurity by providing critical resources and support to women and children in Detroit.

With a steadfast focus on building economic wealth, our chapter has championed entrepreneurs within our sisterhood, educated the community about generational wealth, and contributed over $50,000 to Black-owned businesses in the past two years. Our wellness symposiums and fairs have promoted holistic health by emphasizing nutrition, fitness, and self-care for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Through the Childhood Hunger Initiative PowerPack Program, we have delivered over 3,000-weekend meal packs to children at Carleton Elementary and Cornerstone Jefferson Douglass Academy, ensuring no child goes hungry.

Dedicated to enriching communities in Wayne County, Lambda Pi Omega established the Pearls of Promise Foundation, Incorporated, in 2002. This philanthropic partner organization enhances our efforts in education, scholarship, health, family development, the arts, and economic empowerment. Our chapter also collaborates with esteemed national and community organizations, including AARP, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Birdie’s Bookmobile, and the Metro-Detroit Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, for initiatives such as Shred and Electronic Recycling events.

Our Educational Advancement Foundation Committee has raised substantial funds for scholarships, including creating the Legacy of Pearls Endowment Fund. Many of our members have also established endowed scholarships to support future generations, including:

  • Carrie J. Clark Endowment Fund
  • Crystal and Eugene Sewell Scholarship Fund
  • Dolores A. Sturdivant Endowment Fund
  • Dorothy Reid Arnold Scholarship Fund
  • Wendye D. Mingo Information Technology Endowed Scholarship Fund

Additional information about our scholarships can be found here.

The talented, forward-thinking, and college-educated women of Lambda Pi Omega Chapter have made an indelible mark on Detroit and its surrounding communities. United by our sisterhood, we continue to honor Alpha Kappa Alpha's rich legacy of service by leading boldly in family strengthening, education, advocacy, and beyond. Together, we inspire, empower, and make a difference every day.
